How The Mint + Laurel Team Practices Self-Care
After a long, tiring week of work or school, we all look forward to those few hours on lazy Sundays to care for ourselves. But that’s not the only time when self-care is necessary. You can plan self-care throughout the week to relieve yourself of the stress on your mind or body. Even the simplest things, like a hot cup of herbal tea in the evening, can give you a well-deserved boost mid-week. Need some self-care and wellness ideas? Here’s how our Mint + Laurel team members practice self-care:
Rama loves all things nature -- she takes mindful walks to clear her mind. “I find it cleansing to be in nature,” Rama says. About once a week, she treats her skin to a green tea or mud facial mask, perfect to spook off her little niece and nephew before they erupt in giggles.
Noorah enjoys calmness and serenity -- her favorite self-care habit she’s gotten into is yoga. “There is no better feeling than stretching out every ounce of tension from my body,” she says. Since she’s been working and studying remotely, she sets two screen-free hours each night before bed to disconnect. Instead, she winds down with a cup of ginger tea and a good book. Currently, Noorah is reading “And Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie.
Danyah works towards a goal and rewards herself -- in the summertime, Danyah swims laps in the pool under the energizing sun until she reaches her goal for the day. “Swimming is a big part of my self-care routine. With each lap, I'm forced to face my thoughts and work through the mental and physical strain. I come out feeling like a stronger, more disciplined version of myself,” she says. As a reward, she winds down with a hot bath using her Mint + Laurel soap, followed by a face mask and full skincare routine!
Mandie balances exercise and music - four times a week, Mandie channels all her stress through running three miles near her home. She also enjoys playing the guitar for a musical escape. “For me, self-care means waking up every morning accomplishing something. Whether it’s doing yoga or just making my bed, it inspires me to be productive for the rest of the day,” Mandie says. Face masks are also a favorite in Mandie’s self-care routine.
Sarah soaks up Alaskan nature - when she’s back home in Alaska, Sarah can’t get enough of the rich local nature, especially when she needs a break. "Self-care for me is about cherishing fleeting Alaskan summer days, when the raspberries have ripened and are ready to be picked. I enjoy going out into the garden with my mother to pick them one by one. It's therapeutic and healing. Then we take them in the kitchen to make jams and syrups,” Sarah says.
Nour connects mind and body - in the early mornings, Nour finds herself at the tennis courts of Damascus. Tennis feels cathartic and energizing, but it also boosts her mental focus, which makes it the perfect way to start her day. Nour has also been learning to play the piano in her spare time. Although it's tricky, the sense of reward is worth it.
Kinda finds peace in gardening - she recently started an herb garden at home where she grows mint, rosemary, oregano, thyme, parsley, and lavender. “This is my mini sanctuary, that’s quiet and calming, it allows me to truly be present in the moment,” Kinda says. She even picks fresh leaves from her garden to cook with as an added bonus. Her two cats love the garden too — they play around with the water feature and lounge on the cool stone ground on warm summer days.
