Cotton candy skies over Latakia, the port city of Syria.
According to the UNHCR, the coastal region in Syria and mainly Tartous and Latakia, is responsible for most of the greenhouse vegetables produced in Syria. An area especially know for citrus fruits.
Storms and conflict have affected many greenhouses and farms on the Syrian coast in Tartous and Latakia. Farmers went into debt, not able to rehabilitate their farms, devastation and high cost of living deprived them from restarting production on their farms.
A joint project between the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the UN Refugees Agency, UNHCR assessed the farmers’ needs and decided to support 4000 greenhouses by fixing infrastructures, equipping with plastic sheeting and giving seeds to farmers.
