What you should know about textiles from Syria

Hama is a city located in central Syria with its staple landmark being the Orontes River. Around this great river lays the city’s gardens irrigated by extensive wooden water wheels known as nawa’tr in Arabic. Hama plays important roles in Syria’s agricultural market and in wool and textile weaving. As such, another vital structure that keeps the city of Hama moving is the wooden weaving loom. Dating back to 1853, textile weaving has shaped the spirit of the city and the daily life of its inhabitants.

In Hama, Mint + Laurel artisan Abdullah operates a family-run weaving workshop spanning three generations. While there were originally over 600 workshops in operation in Hama, Abdullah’s workshop is known to be the last one standing. His family includes 11 siblings, with 3 sons running the shop and doing most of the work on large wooden looms using organic cotton. Four women in Abdullah’s family specialize in the signature handmade trim finish.

We honor the city of Hama and Abdullah’s family in keeping its heritage alive. Their collection can be found on Mint + Laurel’s textile page. Whether you are headed to the beach, picnic in the park, or need a comfy, soft blanket for your living room, we have you covered!
